1. Cut a rectangle of black felt 21cm by 10cm. Fold over 2cm at the top and bottom and using pale thread stitch in place to make a channel for the dowel to pass through. (pic a)
  2. Continue stitching down the sides of the rectangle to make a border. Cut a 12cm by 7.5cm rectangle of red felt and round off the corners.
  3. Cut out a scarab shape from lilac felt (see template) and use back-stitch to fix it to the middle of the rectangle. Add lines sewn on to represent the wing casings and head. (pic b)
  4. Use black embroidery thread to mark the legs of the beetle, adding feathery bits to the ends of each. (pic c)
  5. Cut four yellow lotus flower shapes from felt and sew these to each corner of the black wall hanging using green thread to resemble petals. (pic d)
  6. Use yellow thread to sew a small sun above the beetle before stitching the whole panel to the middle of the wall hanging. Thread the dowels through the channels in the wall hanging.
