1. Wash and dry a terracotta pot and paint with two coats of light coloured acrylic, mixing the colour with white paint to get the shade you want. (pic a)
  2. Mix up three parts casting powder with two parts water in an old bowl or jug and stir well. Leave to stand for a minute before pouring carefully into your mould.
  3. Tap the sides gently to allow air bubbles to rise to the surface and top up the mould if necessary. Leave in a warm place to set.
  4. When the casting powder has hardened completely, push out the moulded insects onto a flat surface. Colour the butterflies and insects with acrylic paint. (pic b)
  5. Paint over the coloured insects with PVA glue to act as a varnish and leave to dry. The  colours should blend slightly into each other. (pic c)
  6. Place the painted pot on its side and fix insects over the surface using extra strong multi-purpose  glue. Hold the decorations in  place with a spot of blu-tack until the glue sets. (pic d)

Hi Patti, I wonder if you could tell me where to buy some insect moulds. I am a childminder and I am sure that the children I care for would love to make these.

    Thanks

    Hi Karen,

    Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, we no longer sell the insect moulds shown, but I have two suggestions that you could try….
Firstly, you could use our Wooden Bugs & Birds Stick-ons (product ref. EK148) to decorate the pot. This would mean omitting steps 2 – 5, although you could add other decoration such as ribbon, or stick-ons, to make it more fun.
Secondly, the kids can design their own bugs and creatures using DAS Air Hardening Modelling Clay (EK764): just omit steps 2 – 4 where it mentions the casting powder. This will be great fun as the children can really use their imagination and come up with some great designs.

Let me know how you get on.

    Patti
