Choose three different colours of felt sheet and cut a six petalled flower from each one. (pic a)

Layer the flowers together so the petals overlap. Sew the three flowers shapes together with a few stitches. (pic b)

Make a stack of three buttons in descending size and different colours. Sew the stack to the flower by passing the needle through all layers and corresponding holes. Secure the thread neatly at the back. (pic c)

Turn the flower over and sew a safety pin to the back. Make sure you stitch the right part of the pin to the flower or the brooch won’t open (little fingers need to take care with sharp pins so ask an adult to help). (pic d)

Cut a piece of black felt 11cm by 9cm using pattern scissors. Pin this to a piece of red felt and cut neatly around the outside leaving a 5mm border all round. (pic a)

Fold the two pieces in half together to make a book shape. Use red embroidery thread to sew running stitch down the spine (about 1cm in from the edge), holding the felt pieces together. (pic b)

Cut an elongated heart shape from pink felt. Choose lots of small buttons in pastel shades and sew them to one side of the heart with embroidery thread. (pic c)

Open out the cover of the needle case and fix the decorated heart to it with small over-sewing stitches. (pic d)
